Newton Aycliffe is a “new” town which began life in 1947. Around this time there was a large munitions factory, located on what was then moorland. The factory was closed after the war and the town grew up around what then became important industrial areas. It is best known for these large industrial estates, the manufacture of microchips, premises and distribution centres for major supermarkets and manufacturers ranging from gardening supplies to technology.

Newton Aycliffe is accessed from junction 59 of the A1(M) and local rail services connect with the East Coast mainline running between Edinburgh and London. The town has a number of primary and secondary schools, leisure facilities, a football club and two golf courses.
